What is Plarn?

Plarn, short for plastic yarn, is a sustainable material crafted by upcycling plastic bags into a versatile, durable fiber. Through a simple process of cutting plastic bags into strips and attaching them together, plarn is formed, transforming waste into a valuable resource for crafting and textiles. By repurposing single-use plastic, plarn helps reduce landfill waste, minimizes plastic pollution in ecosystems, and offers a low-cost, eco- friendly alternative to traditional yarns. Plarn is both strong and flexible, making it ideal for creating a variety of items such as reusable bags, mats, baskets, and more.

Why is it important?

Repurposing plastic into plarn is a practical and impactful way to combat the growing issue of plastic pollution. Plastic waste is a major environmental problem, with millions of tons accumulating in landfills and oceans every year, harming wildlife and disrupting ecosystems. Because plastic does not biodegrade, it can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, breaking down into microplastics that contaminate soil, water, and food chains. By transforming plastic bags into plarn, we can divert some of this waste from landfills and give it a second life as a reusable, durable material. This approach not only reduces the amount of plastic entering natural habitats but also raises awareness about sustainable practices. Plarn offers a creative, low-cost way to recycle plastic, allowing communities and individuals to take an active role in reducing waste while crafting items that are functional and eco-friendly.

How to make your own plarn

Step 1

Lay the plastic bag out flat

Step 2

Fold the bag vertically 4-6 times, cutting off the top straps of the bag along with the bottom seam of the bag

Step 3

Cut the plastic bag horizontally to create roughly 16-20 equal sized loops

Step 4

Unfold your first loop and twist it on your crochet hook until it twists back on itself

Step 5

Pull an additional loop through your current one and twist

Step 6

Twist and add loops until the plarn is the desired length
